Symptoms of Dry Skin

There are many indications that your dog is possibly suffering from dry skin. Here are a few symptoms you may notice:

  • Flaking - This occurs when there are tons of dead skin cells coming off your dog's skin and is a huge indicator that your dog's skin is dry.

  • Dandruff - You will begin to notice lots of white flakes all over your dog's fur and on everything that your dog rubs up against.

  • Shedding - In most cases of dry skin, dogs will lose hair and in some cases you may even notice patches of missing hair on their body.

3 Steps to Treat Dry Skin

Now that we've identified some of the main symptoms of dry skin, here's what you can do to help relieve and treat your dog's dry skin:

1. Bathing

It's good to keep your dogs clean and give them a bath, however don't overdo it. Bathing your dog too often can significantly dry up their skin. You can check with your veterinarian to see how often you should wash your dog and stick to that schedule. Another point to note is to use the right type of shampoo. Make sure to buy shampoo that is suited for dog's with dry skin.

2. Olive Oil

Olive oil is quite safe for dogs and is an excellent natural remedy to soothe your dog's dry skin. Use about a tablespoon of olive oil a few times a week and you should see some improvement in your dog's skin. The flakiness should disappear leaving your dog with a smoother and shinier coat. If you notice your dog's got an itch, you can also apply olive oil to your dog's itchy spots to help provide them with fast relief. Use about 5-10 drops of olive oil in a cup of water and apply to your dogs skin or spray on about two times a day. Even after your dog has recovered from dry skin, you can still use this treatment occasionally to help keep their skin moisturized.

3. Vitamin E

Vitamin E can significantly help with skin diseases and can be ingested or applied topically. When you bath your dog, you can drop some vitamin E. You can also look for supplements that incorporate vitamin E. Petaxin Omega Care is a tasty supplement treat that not only includes vitamin E but also fish oil, omega 3-6-9, biotin, zinc, and vitamin C! All these nutrients are packed into soft chews designed to help reduce shedding and improve your dog's skin & coat health significantly.
